It hasn’t been six weeks yet, but I’m doing an update anyway.
One of the symptoms of MVPS is “having a sweet tooth.” That seems to be a two-pronged issue, in that sugar provides relief from fatigue (albeit only momentarily), and chocolate, specifically, provides magnesium. Ounce for ounce, chocolate has one of the highest sources of magnesium. So simply eating chocolate solves two major problems faced daily by most MVPS patients. It’s no wonder some of us crave chocolate in unholy amounts.
I will confess that I had a very serious affair with chocolate up until last week. It’s embarrassing to admit how much chocolate I ate daily (so embarrassing that I really cannot tell you). And regardless of the amount, it never felt like enough. I was a chocolate junkie. I needed the sugar and caffeine for energy, and evidently my body had a serious need for the magnesium that it knew was inside. How do I know? Because I’ve been on a regiment of magnesium supplements for the past week and I haven’t had a single urge to ingest a chocolate bar the size of Texas. In fact, I’ve not had a single piece of chocolate at all since starting my supplements. It’s still early yet, though. A week does not a habit make.
So the jury is still out, but I have very high hopes.
My chocolate obsession reminds me of the phenomenon where some pregnant women get an intense urge to eat chalk. It usually means there’s a mineral deficiency, and it’s a warning sign to seek medical attention. When you eat copious amounts of chocolate, however, although the world looks down at you in disgust, there’s no immediate thought of a deficiency causing the feeding frenzy. There should be.
If a magnesium deficiency truly does turn out to be the reason I have been eating so much chocolate over the past decade or so, I will be grateful that I finally figured it out. (Although Hershey’s may be disappointed.)
